The herb is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other connective tissue disorders that involve inflammatory changes. Willow Bark is an ideal remedy for muscular inflammation and pain, for fevers, respiratory congestion and gout. Willow Bark also has antibiotic actions and is useful for topical applications to help with bleeding wounds.
Willow Bark contains salicylic acid and is the origin of aspirin, which was synthesized in 1853. The bark was used for centuries in Europe to reduce pain and fever and is documented by Native American traditional medicine for the same purposes.
Although Willow Bark has been completely replaced by synthetics in pharmaceutical preparations, it is still used in herbal medicine as a pain reliever, to help alleviate headaches, back aches, muscle aches and cramps, including menstrual cramps.
Note: Willow Bark tea should be avoided when taking blood thinning medications.
